India donated 10,000 metric tonnes of wheat to Afghanistan, as the Taliban-ruled country grapples with the worst food insecurity crisis in the world.

The 10,000 tonnes of wheat donated by India reached the Herat city of Afghanistan on Tuesday, and was milled for distribution to the people suffering from food shortage, tweeted the United Nations World for Food Programme (UNWFP).

Third wheat donation by India to Afghanistan in a year

This latest batch of food relief was the third time India donated wheat to Afghanistan in a year. India sent 20,000 metric tonnes of wheat in March via the Iranian port of Chabahar.

India also donated 40,000 metric tonnes of wheat to Afghanistan in March last year, a few weeks after the Taliban took control over the Central Asian country.

Ever since the Taliban took control of Afghanistan, the country has suffered from a tremendous humanitarian crisis, with the shortage of food affecting one in two children. Many international aid agencies and countries have frozen aid packages to the country due to Taliban interference. As a result, nine million people are suffering from severe economic and food problems.

Amid this, India has committed itself to ‘promote the stability and prosperity of Afghanistan by widening the channels for aid distribution’, Afghan news outlet Khaama Press reported.
