New Delhi: India and China have committed to intensifying their efforts to resolve the ongoing standoff in eastern Ladakh. This development followed a meeting between India's External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Astana, Kazakhstan.

Achieving an early resolution

During the meeting, Jaishankar emphasized the importance of adhering to previous bilateral agreements and protocols regarding border management. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) issued a statement noting that both ministers had a detailed exchange on achieving an early resolution of the remaining issues along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh. Jaishankar reiterated India's stance that relations between the two nations should be based on "mutual respect, mutual interest, and mutual sensitivity."

Statements and agreements

"Met with CPC Politburo member and FM Wang Yi in Astana this morning. Discussed early resolution of remaining issues in border areas. Agreed to redouble efforts through diplomatic and military channels to that end," Jaishankar shared on social media platform X. He further stressed, "Respecting the LAC and ensuring peace and tranquillity in the border areas is essential. The three mutuals – mutual respect, mutual sensitivity, and mutual interest – will guide our bilateral ties."

Talks to stay on the table

Both ministers agreed to continue and enhance meetings between their diplomatic and military officials to carry on discussions aimed at resolving the remaining issues. They concurred that the Working Mechanism on Consultation and Coordination on India-China Border Affairs (WMCC) should hold an early meeting.

The MEA reiterated Jaishankar’s assertion that the India-China relationship depends on adhering to principles of mutual respect, sensitivity, and interest. Prolonging the current situation in the border areas is detrimental to both sides' interests.

Intensifying efforts for complete disengagement

Jaishankar highlighted the urgent need to intensify efforts for complete disengagement from the remaining areas in eastern Ladakh. This move aims to restore peace and tranquillity along the border, paving the way for normalized bilateral relations. The MEA emphasized the imperative of fully respecting relevant bilateral agreements, protocols, and previous understandings. Upholding the LAC and ensuring enduring peace and tranquillity in border regions remain paramount.

What is the Ladakh standoff?

The talks come against the backdrop of the ongoing eastern Ladakh border dispute, which has persisted for five years. Since May 2020, the Indian and Chinese militaries have been locked in a standoff, with a complete resolution still pending despite disengagement from several contentious areas. Relations between the two countries sharply declined following a fierce clash in the Galwan Valley in June 2020, marking the most serious military confrontation between them in decades.
