Hunter Biden, son of U.S. President Joe Biden, has pleaded guilty to nine federal tax charges in a Los Angeles court, according to CNN. The charges include one count of felony tax evasion, two counts of filing fraudulent tax returns, four counts of failing to pay taxes, and two misdemeanour charges for failing to file tax returns. District Judge Mark Scarsi accepted his plea, and sentencing is set for December 16, after the upcoming presidential election.
Biden’s guilty plea came during an intense all-day hearing on the same day jury selection was to begin. Around 120 prospective jurors were kept waiting as both sides negotiated the terms of the case. Initially, Biden had proposed entering an "Alford plea," in which he would maintain his innocence but accept the consequences of sentencing. However, after prosecutors objected, the defence team decided to proceed with an "open plea," foregoing any plea deal with prosecutors.
The "open plea" is a significant move for a defendant of Biden's stature, as it involves admitting guilt without any leniency from prosecutors. "We were as shocked as everyone else in the courtroom this morning," prosecutor Leo Wise said, noting the abrupt shift in Biden's strategy. The decision marks a rare moment in high-profile cases, where defendants often seek plea deals for reduced sentences.
Under oath, Hunter Biden confirmed that no promises or pressure influenced his decision to plead guilty. When asked by Judge Scarsi if he committed the crimes in question, Biden replied, "Yes." The case revolves around Biden's failure to pay $1.4 million in federal taxes and evading taxes through fraudulent deductions. Biden has since paid approximately $2 million in back taxes and penalties after overcoming a long battle with drug addiction.
