US President Joe Biden’s son Hunter Biden was indicted on federal firearms charges on Thursday. This marks the first-ever prosecution of a sitting President’s child. This latest development has the possibility to weigh on Biden’s re-election bid next year.

The three charges include making false statements on a federal firearms form and possession of a firearm as a prohibited person.

Why is Hunter Biden indicted?

Hunter Biden has been charged with three criminal counts related to lying about the fact he was not using illegal drugs at the time of purchasing a firearm at a Delaware gun shop in 2018, even though he was struggling with crack cocaine addiction at the time of the purchase, as per media reports.

According to the indictment Hunter had “provided a written statement on Form 4473 certifying he was not an unlawful user of, and addicted to, any stimulant, narcotic drug, and any other controlled substance, when in fact, as he knew, that statement was false and fictitious.”

The US president’s son has also been under investigation for his business dealings for the last few years. US Special Counsel David Weiss is the one responsible for this investigation as well as the recent charges against Hunter.

The unusual turn of events for the first family of the US adds a layer of drama to the upcoming 2024 presidential campaign, where President Biden is expected to seek reelection against former President Donald Trump, who is facing four criminal trials, as per media reports.

Hunter’s lawyer defends his client

According to media reports, Hunter’s lawyer, Abbe Lowell has condemned the indictment as politically motivated. “As expected, prosecutors filed charges today that they deemed were not warranted just six weeks ago following a five-year investigation into this case,” he said in a statement.

He further added, “The evidence in this matter has not changed in the last six weeks, but the law has, and so has Maga [Make America Great Again] Republicans’ improper and partisan interference in this process.

“Hunter Biden possessing an unloaded gun for 11 days was not a threat to public safety, but a prosecutor, with all the power imaginable, bending to political pressure, presents a grave threat to our system of justice,” Lowell said.

Former President Donald Trump has also commented on this issue and called it a sad situation. He said, “It’s a sad situation, I mean, nobody should be happy about this.”

Earlier on Tuesday, the Republicans had announced an impeachment inquiry into the president in relation to Hunter Biden’s business ventures. They also have mentioned about the presence of testimonies about how Hunter Biden used the “Biden brand” to attract work overseas, but they have not produced hard evidence of wrongdoing by the president.
