New Delhi: In one of the most significant border clashes in months, Hezbollah launched hundreds of rockets and drones at Israel early Sunday. In response, the Israeli military struck southern Lebanon with around 100 jets to prevent a larger attack. The escalation is part of ongoing hostilities linked to the broader conflict in Gaza.

Hezbollah signaled it was not planning further strikes immediately, while Israeli officials stated they do not seek a full-scale war. However, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned, "This is not the end of the story." Both sides have exchanged messages indicating a desire to avoid escalation, but the risk of a regional conflict looms large.
Hezbollah claimed responsibility for launching 320 Katyusha rockets as part of the first phase of retaliation for the assassination of its senior commander, Fuad Shukr, by Israel last month. The group delayed its response to allow ceasefire talks in Gaza but warned that further retaliation is planned.
Israel’s security cabinet convened on Sunday as the country declared a state of emergency. Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and Foreign Minister Israel Katz reaffirmed Israel’s readiness to defend itself while avoiding an all-out war. In Lebanon, Prime Minister Najib Mikati called an emergency meeting, while Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah is set to address the nation.

The escalation has drawn global attention, with the White House stating that President Joe Biden is closely monitoring the situation. The risk of a broader conflict involving Iran and the United States is a growing concern. The UN and other international bodies have called for restraint, warning against the potential for a wider war.
