It is exposed by South China Morning Post that a woman from Shenzhen cheated 36 men by posing as their girlfriend and convinced them to buy apartments nearly 90 km away in Huizhou. It is said that all the apartments were in two residential estates, Jiu Jing Tai and Hao Yi Shang Yuan.
One of the victims, Atao, described how he first met Liu Jia through a dating site in March. He was immediately charmed, believing that she was "gentle, virtuous, family-oriented, and thoughtful."
Liu pretended to be a 30-year-old Hunan woman employed in Shenzhen's online retail business. She raised the topic of marriage and demanded that Atao buy an apartment before she would let him meet her parents or cohabit. To be able to gain his trust, she volunteered to pay 30,000 yuan (around $4,000 or ₹3.3 lakh) as down payment and recommended two Huizhou residential blocks enthusiastically. Developers were offering subsidies of over 100,000 yuan (around $14,000 or ₹11 lakh) to investors at that time.
When Atao bought the apartment, Liu refused to put her signature on the property certificate. She departed shortly thereafter and eventually cut all communication. Another victim, Wang, experienced the same, stating, "After buying the house, Liu started to make excuses not to go out with me. She later blocked my phone calls and deleted me from her contact list."
Over 36 Men Trapped in the Scam Atao explained that at least 36 men, all in their 30s working in Shenzhen, were also victims to the same scam. They had dated Liu for up to one or two months. At present being in financial difficulties, Atao is required to pay 4,100 yuan ($560) per month for the mortgage payment, rent and family expenses.
