Ruchira Kamboj’s UN speech

UN Ambassador Ruchira Kamboj spoke about the Indian lunar mission during a press briefing at UN Headquarters in New York. She called it a historic moment for humanity as India has now ventured into the uncharted territory near the moon’s South Pole.

She also highlighted on India’s sights on the limitless possibilities that lie ahead following the safe landing of Chandrayaan-3.

“By aiming for the moon, India has not only reached it but has also set its sights on the limitless possibilities that lie ahead. As the saying goes, ‘To infinity and beyond’,” the UN permanent representative said.

“And what is significant about this is that India has reached the South Pole of the Moon which no country in the world could reach to date with the dedication and talent of its scientists,” Kamboj further added in her speech.

She also commented that Chandrayaan-3’s success symbolises the aspirations of the Indian people. She said “Chandrayaan-3’s success not only marks India’s presence on the moon but also symbolises the aspirations of 1.4 billion Indians. Beyond that, it’s a historic moment for humanity as we venture into uncharted territory near the moon’s South Pole.”

Kamboj also mentioned the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in her speech and said that as per Modi, the mission’s success “belongs to all of us and holds promise for future scientific achievements that will benefit humanity as a whole.”

India’s UN representative also quoted Modi, “I am confident that all countries in the world, including those from the Global South, are capable of achieving such feats. We can all aspire to the moon and beyond.”

Moreover, regarding India’s lunar mission contributing to various UN objectives, Kamboj highlighted the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) of gender equality.

“A significant number of scientists who worked on India’s moon mission Chandrayaan-3 are women, very much in sync with India’s model of women-led growth and development and also linking beautifully with SDG 5, which is all about gender equity,” she said.
