Rome, Italy: In a groundbreaking achievement, Uma Sekhar of India secured a historic election to the Governing Council of the International Institute for the Unification of Private Law (UNIDROIT) on Thursday, marking the first-ever woman candidate from India to achieve this feat.

Notable Governing Council Election

The Governing Council, comprising 25 positions held by distinguished legal experts, witnessed Uma Sekhar's victory, while candidates from Russia, the USA, and China failed to secure positions in this significant legal council. The election featured 32 contestants, including representatives from the USA, China, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and France.

Uma Sekhar's Landslide Win

Uma Sekhar secured her place on the UNIDROIT Governing Council with an impressive 45 votes out of 59 in the first round of elections held in Rome, Italy. The victory required a minimum of 21 votes for election, and India will hold its position on the Governing Council for the term 2024-28.

India's Delight and Privilege

Following India's success in the UNIDROIT Governing Council election, the Embassy of India in Rome expressed joy, stating that it is a privilege to be part of the organisation's policy-making process. The Embassy shared the news on social media, highlighting India's active role in international legal affairs.

"Delighted to announce that India got elected to UNIDROIT Governing Council today in a fiercely contested election. Privileged to be part of the organisation's policy-making process. India also successfully completes its tenure as President of the GA for the year 2022-23. @MEAIndia," wrote the Indian Embassy in Rome.
