New Delhi: In a historic move, France has become the first country globally to pass a law granting women the freedom to choose abortion. During a joint session of parliament on Monday, French lawmakers overwhelmingly voted in favor of a bill that revises the country’s 1958 constitution to cement women’s “guaranteed freedom” to terminate pregnancies.
With 780 votes in favor, the French parliament has cleared the path for the bill to transform into law, ensuring a woman's right to abortion. Despite opposition, including 72 lawmakers voting against the bill, the majority hailed its passing, culminating in a standing ovation within the parliament.
Following the bill's approval, women across France erupted in joyous celebrations. The iconic Eiffel Tower in Paris illuminated with the message "My Body My Choice" as a symbol of solidarity and empowerment. Women's rights activists commended President Emmanuel Macron for delivering on his promise, especially amidst recent setbacks to abortion rights in the United States.

Describing the legislation as a source of "French pride," President Emmanuel Macron emphasized its significance as a universal message. Despite criticism from anti-abortion groups and the Vatican, Macron reaffirmed the government's commitment to upholding women's reproductive rights.

France has a long history of advocating for reproductive rights. Former Health Minister Simone Veil spearheaded the campaign for abortion legalization, leading to its formalization in 1975. Veil's efforts marked a significant milestone in women's rights in France, establishing her as a prominent feminist figure in the country's history.
