New Delhi: Sheikh Hasina, the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, has arrived at the Hindon Air Force Base in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, after fleeing her country due to escalating anti-government protests. Her sudden departure follows her resignation amid violent demonstrations that have resulted in over 300 deaths.

Unrest follows resignation

Following Hasina's resignation, Bangladesh experienced widespread unrest. Protesters stormed her residence in Dhaka, looting items such as sarees, tea cups, televisions, and paintings. In a symbolic act of defiance, they also destroyed a statue of Hasina's father, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, a revered figure in the country's history of independence.

Initially sparked by student-led protests against government hiring practices in July, the demonstrations have grown in intensity, ultimately leading to Hasina's departure and the military's announcement of plans to establish an interim government.

Escalating violence against Hindu minority

In the wake of Hasina's departure, the violence has tragically targeted the Hindu minority in Bangladesh. Numerous videos have surfaced showing local extremists exploiting the chaos to attack Hindu homes. The unrest has also seen violent assaults on Hindu temples, including the ISKCON and Kali temples, forcing devotees to seek refuge. With at least 300 casualties, including Hindu councilor Kajal Roy from Rangpur, the day has become one of the deadliest in the history of these protests.

The ministry has also urged Indian nationals currently in the country to exercise caution, limit their movements, and maintain contact with the Indian High Commission in Dhaka to ensure their safety.
