Highest Indian origin MPs in House of Commons in 2024, majority held by Sikhs

In the worst defeat of the Conservative party, they lost power after 14 years which has changed the face of House of Commons which will see 29 MPs of Indian origin, out of which 12 of them are first-time MPs.

After the Labour landslide in the 2024 general election, the House of Commons will welcome a record 29 members of Indian origin. Labour boasts the highest number of PIO (Person of Indian Origin) MPs, with 19 members, 12 of whom are newcomers.

The Labour seat retainers

Preet Kaur Gill, who retained Birmingham Edgbaston, was born in Birmingham to Indian parents; her father was president of Guru Nanak Gurdwara, Smethwick, the UK’s first gurdwara. Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi retains Slough. Seema Malhotra has her roots in Goa and retains Feltham and Heston. Valerie Vaz, sister of Keith Vaz, wins Walsall and Bloxwich Lisa Nandy retains Wigan. Navendu Mishra retains Stockport.

Sikhs ruling the House of Commons 

Baggy Shanker, a Sikh, won Derby South, a seat that has been Labour since its formation. Born and raised in the UK, his father came to the UK in the 1950s and worked in a foundry. He works for Rolls-Royce. He is also a Labour councillor and had been Labour leader of Derby City Council until June 18 when he was ousted after a vote of no confidence by opposition councillors. Gurinder Singh Josan won the seat of Smethwick. He is 51 years old and he used to be a trustee of a Gurudwara in Smethwick.

Harpreet Uppal is a British Sikh who won the seat of Huddersfield and emerged as the first female MP of the constituency. She was born and raised in Fartown. Her father migrated to the UK in 1962. Jas Athwal won the seat from Ilford South, he is 60 years old. Dr Jeevun Sandher snatched the seat of Loughborough from the conservatives. His family hails from Jalandhar, Punjab and he is a British sikh. Kirith Entwistle is another Sikh MP born in Southall, her father moved to the UK from Delhi in the 1980s. Satvir Kaur bagged the seat in the Southampton Test, which is a strong labour seat.

Kanishka Narayan won the seat of Glamorgan under the nose of the conservative. He is the first ethnic minority MP of the constituency, he was born in Bihar and moved to Wales at the age 12. Warinder Juss is all set to become the first Keralite MP, bagging a seat from Wolverhampton West. Nadia Whittome retains Nottingham East. 

Many Labour Party members including Sojan Joseph, Sonia Kumar, and Sureena Brackenbridge all the new additions to the House of Commons. Conservative newcomers include Suella Braverman, Priti Patel, Gagan Mohindra, Shivani Raja, and Neil-Shastri Hurst.
