Henry Kissinger, the controversial former United States Secretary of State and recipient of the 1973 Nobel Peace Prize, passed away at the age of 100 on Wednesday, according to Kissinger Associates Inc.

Ex-United States Secretary of State Henry Kissinger

Kissinger, who served under Presidents Nixon and Ford, was a dominant figure in American diplomacy in the 1970s, engineering the policy of détente with the Soviet Union as well as the opening of relations between the US and China. His role in the Vietnam War and other international conflicts made him a hugely influential yet intensely polarising figure on the world stage.

As news emerged of his death earlier today at his home in New York, tributes began pouring in from political allies and opponents alike.

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said “The world has lost a towering figure who shaped history”, while the Kremlin issued a statement acknowledging that “despite periods of tension, Kissinger played a key role in building constructive bilateral relations between our countries.”

However, human rights organisations and activists were quick to condemn his controversial foreign policy record in places like Chile, Argentina and East Timor, with protests planned in several cities this evening. “A war criminal has escaped justice,” read a statement from the Human Rights Foundation, “but the bloody legacy of his actions will not be forgotten nor forgiven.”

In his bestselling books and articles, and by advising successive US presidents as a high-profile elder statesman, Kissinger continued to spark debate about America’s global role right up until his death. His 1957 book ‘Nuclear Weapons and Foreign Policy’ became a seminal text on strategic thinking and international realpolitik.

According to close family members, Kissinger died peacefully in his sleep, with his children and grandchildren by his bedside. Plans for his funeral arrangements are expected to be announced later today.
