Nepal Floods: Nepal is grappling with a devastating natural disaster as relentless rainfall has led to catastrophic flooding across the country. According to officials from Nepal's armed police force, at least 60 individuals have lost their lives, while 36 others have sustained injuries due to the severe weather conditions. The situation remains critical, with around 44 people reported missing, including 16 in the Kathmandu Valley alone.

Impact on Kathmandu valley

Bishwo Adhikari, the deputy spokesperson for Nepal Police, provided a breakdown of the fatalities, revealing that 34 deaths occurred in the Kathmandu Valley, 19 in five districts of Bagmati Province (excluding Kathmandu), and 7 in Koshi Province. The flooding has submerged approximately 226 homes in Kathmandu, forcing many residents to evacuate. In response, the police have mobilized around 3,000 security personnel to assist in rescue operations, with more than 1,000 people successfully rescued so far.

"Police are working with other agencies and locals to rescue and find the missing people," stated Basanta Adhikari, emphasizing the collaborative efforts underway. The situation has been further complicated by obstructions on the main highways, with 44 locations affected nationwide.

Authorities issue flash flood warnings

The Nepalese government has been on high alert since Friday, as heavy downpours prompted disaster management authorities to issue warnings about the risk of flash floods. Acting Prime Minister Prakash Man Singh convened an emergency meeting with key ministers, including the Home Minister and Home Secretary, along with the heads of security agencies, to discuss the escalating crisis and bolster search and rescue operations.

“Intensifying search and rescue operations is our top priority,” emphasized Prime Minister Man Singh during the meeting.

The floods have not only claimed lives but have also disrupted essential services. Kathmandu experienced a significant power outage due to the flooding, which impacted the main transmission line. Fortunately, electricity was restored in the evening, allowing some semblance of normalcy to return amid the ongoing crisis.
