A strong typhoon by the name of Haikui is currently on its way toward Taiwan and is anticipated to make landfall in the southeast city of Taitung on Sunday. Recently all commercial aircraft were grounded, and over 3,000 people were evacuated in the early hours of Sunday as the island nation’s citizens prepared for the storm.
The area is anticipated to be severely inundated on the island’s south and east by the torrential downpours and strong winds. Several businesses, counties, and localities have closed, and schools have been called off classes in Yunlin County and the nearby Penghu County.
Typhoon Haikui, which is expected to be weaker than Typhoon Saola, is expected to cause devastation when it makes landfall in the thinly populated far southeast of Hong Kong. Saola made landfall in Guangdong province on Saturday, prompting preparations in Hong Kong and other regions of China. All commercial flights were canceled, and schools were ordered to close.
According to the Taiwan government, as many as 2,868 individuals were evacuated from settlements, primarily in the south and east, and have been taken to safety.
The island’s two major domestic carriers, UNI Air and Mandarin Airlines, were canceled on Sunday. Also, all ferry services to the shore were suspended. Reports suggest, that Haikui is on the verge of intensifying into a Category 1 or 2 typhoon when it makes landfall in Taiwan. The Taiwanese military has dispatched troops to help with the rescue operation, flood assistance, and evacuation efforts.
Haikui is expected to make its way into China via the Taiwan Strait. The weather office in Taiwan has estimated that it is currently traveling westward at a pace of 9 km/h (5.59 mph) and with winds of 144 kph (89.5 mph). More than 500mm of rain is expected to fall on the island during the next 24 hours, which could cause landslides and flash flooding in the area.
