New Delhi: The Indian government has officially confirmed Prime Minister Narendra Modi's forthcoming visit to Ukraine, underscoring New Delhi's commitment to fostering a peaceful resolution in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to travel to Poland on August 21, with his visit to Ukraine set for August 23, according to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). This visit marks a historic first, as PM Modi will be the first Indian Prime Minister to set foot in Ukraine since diplomatic relations were established between the two nations.

Balancing diplomatic relations

PM Modi’s planned visit to Ukraine comes after his recent trip to Russia, which was marked by a strong display of camaraderie with Russian President Vladimir Putin. This meeting drew criticism from Western nations, which urged the Indian Prime Minister to denounce Moscow's actions in Ukraine. The upcoming visit to Ukraine is perceived as India's effort to balance its diplomatic relations with both Russia and Ukraine amidst the conflict.

India's foreign policy approach

During a media briefing, Tanmaya Lal, Secretary West at the MEA, emphasized India's independent foreign policy approach. He highlighted that India maintains robust ties with both Russia and Ukraine and has consistently advocated for dialogue and diplomacy to resolve the crisis.

"It's not a zero-sum game," Lal asserted. He elaborated, "Achieving lasting peace requires options that are acceptable to both parties, and it can only be secured through a negotiated settlement. India remains engaged with all stakeholders to support this goal."

Lal also noted that PM Modi has engaged in discussions with both Ukrainian and Russian leaders, aiming to contribute positively towards a peaceful resolution. "India is prepared to provide all possible support to help resolve this complex issue," he added. "At this stage, it is not for us to predict or preempt the outcomes of these discussions."
