Significant blow to Palestinian militant group

Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh was assasinated, along with one of his bodyguards, in an attack on their residence in Iran's capital Tehran on Wednesday. Haniyeh's death marks a critical moment in the Israel-Hamas war, as the Israeli military has long aimed to eliminated him and other leaders of the Palestinian militant group for their role in the October 7 attacks. The killing comes at a fraught time for the Middle East, with escalating confrontations between Israel and Hezbollah threatening to expand into a wider regional war, and Hamas battles Israel's military in Gaza.
