On the second day of G20 Summit, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva shed tears during a visit to Raj Ghat before the Summit in New Delhi, where he paid tribute to his ‘role model,’ Mahatma Gandhi. He noted that Mahatma Gandhi had a great meaning in his political life and saw a connection between the efforts of his Labour Movement and Gandhi’s nonviolent campaign.

“Personally, I was very much touched and emotional when I went to pay homage to our dear Gandhi today,” President Lula said in his concluding remarks as global leaders gathered at the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial before the second day of the G20 Summit.

Brazil President’s closing remarks in G20 Summit

In his remarks at the closing session of the G20 Presidency, the Brazilian President said, “And I would like to say, Prime Minister Modi that I personally am very much touched emotionally when I went to pay a homage to our dear Gandhi. Everybody knows that in my political life, Mahatma Gandhi has great meaning because the struggle for non-violence with role model that I followed for many decades when I was in the labour movement. And that’s why I am very much touched and emotional. And I like to thank you for the opportunity to pay this homage that we did today.”

“And I like to say to all of you that Brazil will take the chair of the G20 and we will make a tremendous endeavour to manage to at least try to do something as the same that our brothers and sisters from India did,” he added.

Three priorities of Brazil chairmanship

Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva congratulated India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for their efforts in hosting the G20 Summit on Sunday, outlining three priorities for his country’s chairmanship of the gathering. These, according to the Brazilian President, include social inclusion and hunger relief, energy transition, sustainable development, and reform of global governance institutions.

“All these priorities are part of the Brazilian presidency motto, which says ‘Building a fair world and a sustainable planet’,” Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva stated at the G20 Summit’s concluding session in New Delhi. Moreover there will be two task forces formed called the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty and the Global Mobilisation Against Climate Change, Lula said.

After PM Modi had passsed on the G20 gravel to the President Lula, he congratulated Modi on the success of the Summit and also welcomed everyone to Rio de Jenerio for the 2024 Summit.
