Prior to the second day of the G20 Summit in New Delhi, the British High Commission in India announced that UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak had committed a record $2 billion to the Green Climate Fund (GCF), making it the UK’s largest single financial contribution to combating climate change globally.

A crucial part of funding programs and activities aimed at combating climate change is played by the Green Climate Fund (GFC), the largest such fund in the world, established as part of the United Nations’ climate change negotiations to help poor states acquire the funding they need to reach their goals for reducing carbon emissions, creating cleaner energy sources, and adapting to a warming planet.

“Today’s pledge represents a 12.7% increase on the UK’s previous contribution to the GCF for the period of 2020-2023, which was itself a doubling of our initial funding to establish the fund in 2014,” a UK government release said.

UK PM’s speech in G20 Summit

According to a government statement, the pledge would represent the largest single financial commitment the UK has made to date to aid in the fight against climate change. Britain has committed to spend 11.6 billion pounds ($14.46 billion) on international climate finance between 2021 and 2026.

During his speech at the G20 Summit, Sunak emphasised the necessity of taking urgent climate action and urged world leaders to join forces in their determination to cut carbon emissions and support countries dealing with the negative effects of climate change.

“The UK is stepping up and delivering on our climate commitments, both by decarbonising our own economy and supporting the world’s most vulnerable to deal with the impact of climate change,” Sunak said, as quoted by the Prime Minister’s Office.

“This is the kind of leadership that the world rightly expects from G20 countries. And this government will continue to lead by example in making the UK, and the world, more prosperous and secure,” he added.

What is there after this Summit?

Leaders from the world’s top economies met at the G20 Summit, which provided a forum for discussion of significant global concerns like climate change.

Following the prosperous G20 Summit, the world’s focus will turn to the upcoming COP28 Summit, when countries are anticipated to make crucial choices and agreements to curb global warming and lessen its effects.
