The global leaders witnessed the ceremonial handover of the G20 leadership from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who praised India for speaking out on various important issues.
PM Modi presented the gavel to Brazil during the closing session and extended wishes for the upcoming residency. On December 1 of this year, Brazil will formally lead the role of the elite grouping’s presidency.
Speaking at the event, Lula da Silva welcomed Modi and commended India for working on raise issues that concern developing nations. Silva also listed social inclusion, the fight against hunger, energy transition, and sustainable development as G20 priorities. He said the UN Security Council needs new developing countries as permanent and non-permanent members to regain political strength. Also, he added, “We want greater representation for emerging countries at the World Bank and the IMF.”
On September 9, at the Bharat Mandapam International Exhibition and Convention Centre in New Delhi, the Group of 20 welcomed the African Union as a permanent member. ‘One Earth, One Family, One Future’ has been emphasised as the theme of this year’s summit by India, which is currently holding the G20 chair.
