In the latest update, six children and two adults have been injured in a knife attack in the picturesque town of Annecy in the French Alps. As per sources, at least three of the victims are in critical condition in hospital.

According to the official sources, the incident happened at about 9.45 am, a man armed with a knife entered a children’s playground near the town’s famous lake and attacked a group of children aged about three years old as they played.

The French president, Emmanuel Macron, tweeted that it was an act of “absolute cowardice” and the nation was in shock. He mentioned, “Attack of absolute cowardice this morning in a park in Annecy. Children and an adult are between life and death. The Nation is in shock. Our thoughts are with them as well as their families and the emergency services mobilised.”

Apart from the state police, anti-terrorist investigators are also involved in the investigation. It is also said that the man was 32 years old, was carrying Syrian identity papers and was an asylum seeker.

The prime minister, Élisabeth Borne and MPs in the national parliament held a minute’s silence as news of the attack broke in the French media.

French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said on Twitter, “Several people including children were injured by an individual armed with a knife in a square in Annecy. The individual has been arrested thanks to the very rapid intervention of the police.”
