In a landmark moment, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday was conferred with ‘Grand Cross of the Legion of Honour’ by French President Emmanuel Macron, the highest French honour in civilian or military orders.

With this honour, Modi becomes the first Indian Prime Minister to receive this honour.

“Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi was conferred with the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honour, France’s highest award, on 13 July 2023, by H.E. Mr. Emmanuel Macron, President of the Republic of France. Prime Minister thanked President Macron for this singular honour on behalf of the people of India,” a statement released by the Union Ministry of External Affairs read.

The award ceremony took place at the historic Elysee Palace, where the Prime Minister was invited to a private dinner by President Macron and First Lady Brigitte Macron.

Modi joins select group of foreign leaders to be awarded Legion of Honour

The Grand Cross of the Legion of Honour – established by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1802 – is given to the people with the highest distinction in their respective fields. While the award is typically limited to only French citizens, foreign nationals who serve the interests of France or uphold its ideals can receive the honour.

The previous foreign leaders to receive the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honour are Nelson Mandela, King Charles III, Angela Merkel, Boutros Boutros-Ghali, Volodymyr Zelensky, and Vladimir Putin.
