Former Chinese Premier Li Keqiang died at 68 after suffering a sudden heart attack, media sources said on Friday. Xi is said to have experienced a sudden heart attack while he was resting in Shanghai on Thursday and passed away in the early hours of Friday,

Li was the head of the head of the cabinet and also served as Premier under Chinese President Xi Jinping for more than 10 years from 2013.

He was also considered as the country's future leader and was once viewed as a top Communist Party leadership contender but he was increasingly sidelined by Xi in recent years.

The elite Peking University-educated economist was also hailed for helping to steer the country through the global financial crisis relatively unscathed.
