The parent company of Facebook and Instagram, Meta, is currently facing federal scrutiny in the United States over potential involvement in illegal drug sales. Virginia prosecutors are actively examining allegations that Meta may have facilitated such activities on its platforms.Investigation into Potential Drug Dealing on FacebookA recent report, citing sources familiar with the investigation and obtained documents, revealed that prosecutors issued subpoenas last year in connection to the case. These subpoenas mandate the appearance of individuals before a grand jury, where they are questioned as part of a criminal probe.Additionally, prosecutors have requested records related to violative drug content on Metas platforms and/or the illicit sale of drugs via Metas platforms, as per the subpoenas.Telehealth Companies and COVID-19 RestrictionsA report alleges that telehealth companies capitalised on COVID-19 restrictions and limited access to healthcare services. These companies purportedly advertised various drugs and medications, including those for anxiety and ADHD, and offered direct sales.Unfortunately, these ads are believed to have contributed to the misuse of controlled substances like Adderall and other illegal drugs. Interviews with patients and employees associated with this matter were conducted and later cited in the report.Involvement of the FDA and Metas ResponseThe investigation also involves the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which is assisting in examining drug content and potential illegal drug sales on Metas platforms. In response to the allegations, a Meta spokesperson stated, “The sale of illicit drugs is against our policies, and we work to find and remove this content from our services.” The spokesperson emphasised Metas proactive cooperation with law enforcement authorities in combating the sale and distribution of illicit drugs.
