Fall of Conservatives: How economic, healthcare issues led to Sunak's defeat after 14 years

In recent years, UK has been facing a series of crises one after another, which are the primary reasons for the defeat of Sunak's government. The most evident example of this is the economy. The country has been struggling with low growth rates and performing poorly compared to other major developed economies.

New Delhi: After a 14-year tenure, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's Conservative Party has faced a significant defeat in the UK general election. Sunak has taken responsibility for the party's poor performance and extended his congratulations to the Labour Party for their victory. Several critical factors have contributed to this electoral setback, including anti-incumbency sentiment, economic decline, immigration challenges, and deteriorating public services.

Economic Struggles

In recent years, the UK has contended with multiple crises, particularly within the economic sector. The nation has experienced sluggish growth rates and has significantly underperformed compared to other major developed economies. In 2023, the UK economy saw a mere 0.1 percent growth and slipped into a recession earlier in the year.

Inflation and Cost of Living

Alongside economic struggles, the cost of living crisis has been a major concern. Inflation soared to a 40-year high in October 2022. Although there has been a slight decrease recently, the high inflation rates have left many UK citizens impoverished and dissatisfied with the current government.

Public Services Under Strain

Public services in the UK have been deteriorating, with the National Health Service (NHS) facing a severe funding crisis. This has made it increasingly difficult for citizens to access timely and affordable medical care, intensifying public frustration towards the Conservative Party’s handling of the NHS.

Immigration Challenges

Immigration has also been a significant issue, particularly with the influx of refugees from Turkey, Iran, and Afghanistan. Known as the "small boats crisis," thousands of refugees have been crossing the English Channel in small vessels to enter the UK. This has posed a serious challenge for the country, and with the Conservative Party having been in power for 14 years, they have faced substantial blame for the issue.

Internal Divisions and Political Instability

The Conservative Party has been marred by internal divisions, with factions within the party competing for dominance, leading to political instability. This perceived failure to effectively manage major issues ranging from health and defense to immigration and the economy has shaken public confidence. The UK has seen four prime ministers in the past eight years, and nearly two-thirds of voters now believe the Conservative Party is not fit for re-election.
