Sinwar's family before October 7 massacre: New footage released by Israeli authorities reveals Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar taking his wife and children to safety through an underground tunnel just hours before the October 7 massacre in Israel. The video, which surfaced on Saturday, shows Sinwar allegedly carrying a TV with him, reportedly watching the carnage unfold live as Hamas launched one of the deadliest attacks in Israel's history.

Video Released by IDF: Sinwar's movements exposed

The footage, claimed to be from October 6, 2023, was made public by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF). According to Rear Admiral Daniel Hagri, IDF spokesperson, the video captures Sinwar in a tunnel with his family, preparing for a prolonged stay underground. In the video, Sinwar can be seen stocking up on food and supplies as he makes arrangements for his safety. This was just a day before Hamas operatives stormed into Israel, killing over 1,200 people and taking 252 hostages.

Hagri emphasized that the video further proves Hamas leaders prioritize their own safety over the lives of Gaza's civilians, using them as "human shields" while they hide in secure locations. “Sinwar's movements between Khan Younis and Rafah show that, contrary to rumors, he was in Gaza the entire time,” Hagri stated, dismissing claims that Sinwar had fled to Egypt.

Sinwar was hiding while leading Hamas attacks

Hagri revealed that Israeli military intelligence had been tracking Sinwar's movements for months, maintaining surveillance over him and his family. Despite widespread speculation that he had escaped Gaza, Sinwar was closely monitored between Khan Younis and Rafah. IDF and Shin Bet, Israel's internal security service, were eventually able to locate him and launch a targeted strike, eliminating him in a civilian residence last Wednesday.

Mass casualties and hostage crisis post-October 7 attack

Since the October 7 Hamas attack, Israel has reported that at least 1,200 people were killed. In addition to the massacre, 252 Israeli and foreign nationals were taken hostage, with over 30 of the remaining 97 hostages presumed dead. Hamas has also held two Israeli civilians captive since 2014 and 2015, alongside the bodies of two soldiers killed in a 2014 conflict.
