France’s iconic Eiffel Tower was temporarily evacuated after a bomb alert on Saturday, a police source told the French daily newspaper Le Parisien. The ‘precautionary measure’ came amid the anticipation of a surge in visitors due to the ongoing long weekend.

The alert prompted authorities to swiftly clear the area, establishing a large security perimeter and redirecting traffic. The monument was evacuated at 12:15 PM, including its forecourt and the three floors of the tower, including the renowned restaurant located within.

Bomb disposal deployed in ‘rare’ situation: Eiffel Tower body

The police’s bomb disposal experts were deployed to the scene to conduct thorough checks. SETE, the public body responsible for the operation of the Eiffel Tower, confirmed that this was a routine measure carried out in such situations.

“It is a usual procedure in this kind of situation, which is rare nevertheless,” SETE officials said.

The security sweep extended to the tower’s premises, including the restaurant situated on one of the tower’s floors. The evacuation lasted for approximately two hours.

As per Le Parisien’s report, this precautionary measure was in response to a potential threat and aimed to guarantee the safety of all those visiting the iconic site. Following the thorough inspection and confirmation of the area’s security, the alert was lifted and the Eiffel Tower reopened to the public.

This incident echoes a similar event in September 2020 when the tower was evacuated for two hours due to an anonymous bomb threat that turned out to be unfounded, according to reports by Le Parisien.
