Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte, one of Europe’s most experienced and long-serving leaders resigned on Friday. According to the information, the move has been taken after the days of crisis between the four parties, which failed to produce a deal. Reportedly, they were not able to tackle the migration, with expected elections in November.
Rutte has offered his resignation and of all ministers, along with the state secretaries to King Willem-Alexander. Sources said that he is expected to meet the King on Saturday, and will explain the reason for the prompted move.
Rutte while addressing the press conference said, “It is no secret that the coalition partners have very different views on migration policy. And today, unfortunately, we have to conclude that those differences are irreconcilable. That is why I will immediately…offer the resignation of the entire Cabinet to the king in writing.”
On why this issue, in particular, will lead to new elections, he said, “Asylum policy is an important subject if you ask people. In addition to the war in Ukraine, it is an important subject. We think it is important to steer it in the right direction.”
The greatest coalition negotiations in Dutch political history culminated in the inauguration of Rutte’s coalition government, the fourth he has headed. However, Rutte continues to serve as the outgoing cabinet’s leader.
