During a CNN town hall in New Hampshire, former US President Donald Trump declined to take a definitive standpoint on whether he supports Ukraine or Russia in the ongoing war. Trump emphasised his priority of ending the loss of life, stating, “I don’t think in terms of winning and losing. I think in terms of getting it settled.” He expressed his desire for a resolution to the conflict, pledging, “I want everybody to stop dying. They’re dying. Russians and Ukrainians. I want them to stop dying. And I’ll have that done.” Trump went against the established Republican policy of supporting Ukraine.

Trump asserted that he could swiftly end the war within 24 hours by directly negotiating with Russian leader Vladimir Putin and his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky. He mentioned their strengths and weaknesses and stated that meeting with them would bring an immediate resolution. However, he avoided directly answering whether he believed Putin was a war criminal for alleged atrocities in Ukraine, suggesting that labelling him as such could hinder potential negotiations.

Regarding Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, Trump remarked that it was a mistake, adding, “He would have never gone in if I was president.” Despite facing criminal accusations and ongoing inquiries, Trump has already declared his decision to run for the presidency again in 2024 and remains a leading candidate for the Republican Party’s nomination.
