New Delhi: In a surprise move, former President Donald Trump has become the official Republican presidential nominee, and he has chosen Ohio US Senator JD Vance to join him as his vice presidential running mate for the upcoming election. The decision was unveiled at the Republican Party's national convention kickoff held at Milwaukee's Fiserv Forum.

JD Vance as running mate

Trump took to his Truth Social platform to express his confidence in Vance, stating, "As Vice President, JD will continue to fight for our Constitution, stand with our Troops, and will do everything he can to help me MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN." The four-day convention began amidst heightened security following an attempted assassination of Trump in Pennsylvania just days earlier. Despite the incident, Trump received a legal victory as a federal judge dismissed one of his criminal prosecutions earlier in the day.

Trump's strategy to solidify support

Scheduled to formally accept the Republican nomination on Thursday, Trump, 78, is poised for a contentious electoral battle against Democratic President Joe Biden, 81. Polls indicate a tightly contested rematch between the two candidates, with Trump signaling hesitance to commit to accepting election results if defeated. JD Vance, 39, once a vocal critic of Trump during the 2016 campaign, has since become a staunch supporter, aligning with Trump's assertions of widespread fraud in the 2020 election. His selection underscores Trump's strategy to solidify support within his party and bolster his electoral prospects.

What Trump said?

In light of recent events, including the attempted assassination, Trump indicated a shift in his convention speech focus towards national unity rather than emphasizing differences with Biden. "This is a chance to bring the whole country, even the whole world, together. The speech will be a lot different than it would've been two days ago," Trump remarked to the Washington Examiner.

Monday also saw another legal victory for Trump, as US District Judge Aileen Cannon dismissed federal charges related to retaining classified documents post-presidency. However, Trump still faces legal challenges, including a September sentencing in New York for efforts to cover up payments to Stormy Daniels before his 2016 election victory.

Trump shot during campaign rally

Former President Donald Trump was hastily escorted off stage during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania after gunshots were fired. Trump, visibly smeared with blood, clutched his right ear, with blood apparent on his cheek and mouth.

As the shots rang out, Secret Service agents quickly surrounded the Republican candidate, escorting him off the stage. Defiantly, Trump raised a fist to the crowd as he was led away. This shocking incident heightens the anxiety in a nation already on edge with the upcoming November election, where Trump is set to face President Joe Biden.
