Former President of the United States Donald Trump made a notable shift in his stance on immigration policy concerning foreign students. Initially known for his stringent immigration policies, Trump signaled a potential change in approach during his presidency. On Thursday, he said that foreign students who will graduate from colleges in the United States would receive a green card automatically, so they can stay in the country.

While speaking at an event, Trump asserted that country needs to retain the brightest minds and this policy will give them a chance to stay in the US if they wish to.

Previous stances taken by Trump

During his presidency, Trump implemented several policies aimed at reducing both legal and illegal immigration. These included travel bans on several predominantly Muslim countries, efforts to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, and stricter visa requirements.

Trump's administration also took a hard stance on H-1B visas, which are often used by foreign students after graduation to work in the US. The focus was on tightening eligibility criteria and increasing scrutiny of applications.

U-Turn on Green Cards for Foreign Students

In a departure from his previous policies, Trump hinted at making it easier for high-skilled immigrants and foreign students to remain in the US after graduation. This potential shift was seen as a way to attract and retain talent within the country.

During his term, Trump occasionally spoke about the importance of merit-based immigration, which would prioritise individuals with skills and education that benefit the US economy. This could include providing a pathway to green cards for foreign students who graduate from American universities, particularly in STEM fields (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics).

Rationale for the Shift

The change in approach was likely influenced by the recognition of the positive impact that skilled immigrants have on the US economy. Foreign students contribute significantly to research, innovation, and the labor market.

Business leaders and tech industry executives have long advocated for more accessible pathways for international graduates to stay in the US, citing the competitive advantage and innovation they bring.

Overall, Trump's suggestion to facilitate green cards for foreign students marked a significant potential shift from his administration's earlier hardline immigration stance, reflecting a complex interplay between economic needs and immigration policy.
