Former U.S. President Donald Trump launched a sharp critique of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Wednesday, accusing him of mishandling the ongoing war and missing a crucial opportunity for peace negotiations in Saudi Arabia. His comments came shortly after he referred to Zelensky as a "dictator" in a post on Truth Social. "A dictator without elections—Zelenskyy better act fast, or there won’t be a country left," Trump wrote, further intensifying tensions as diplomatic discussions between the U.S. and Russia gained momentum to seek an end to the war.

Ukraine left out of peace talks

Despite Washington initiating negotiations with Moscow to explore a resolution to the conflict, Ukraine has been excluded from these discussions. In response, Zelensky asserted that his country would not recognize any agreement reached without its direct participation.

Trump blames Zelensky for the war

Speaking at a press conference at his Florida residence, Trump reiterated his views, stating, “Russia wants to bring an end to the destruction happening over there. Thousands of soldiers are dying every week—Russians, Ukrainians, and even many Koreans. This war needs to stop. It should have never started.”

He placed responsibility on Zelensky for prolonging the conflict, suggesting that a peace deal could have been reached earlier. “Today I hear complaints about not being invited to negotiations. Well, it's been three years—you should have ended this long ago. You could have struck a deal,” Trump remarked.

Criticism of U.S. aid to Ukraine

Trump also condemned the massive financial support provided to Ukraine, questioning the necessity of such spending. “Imagine this—Zelensky, a comedian with moderate success, convinced the United States to spend $350 billion on a war that should never have begun. Without U.S. backing and without ‘Trump,’ he’ll never be able to settle it,” he stated.

U.S. reassures Ukraine amid diplomatic efforts

As Kyiv expresses concerns over being left out of the peace negotiations, U.S. officials have sought to reassure Ukrainian leadership. The Secretary of State has emphasized that Ukraine will have a significant role in determining the final outcome. Addressing the matter, Senator Marco Rubio told the Associated Press, “No one is being pushed aside. There will be engagement with Ukraine, our European partners, and other stakeholders. However, any resolution will require Russia’s involvement.”
