International News : A powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar on March 28, causing widespread destruction and claiming thousands of lives. The disaster has left many areas without power, phone, or internet connectivity, making it challenging to assess the full extent of the devastation.

Rescue Efforts Wind Down

Rescue operations are gradually giving way to relief and recovery efforts, with the death toll currently standing at 3,600 and still rising. In the capital city of Naypyitaw, residents are clearing debris and collecting wood from damaged houses, while soldiers are removing wreckage from Buddhist monasteries. International rescue teams from Singapore, Malaysia, and India have completed their missions and returned home

Destruction and Casualties

The earthquake has caused significant damage to six regions and states, with many buildings, homes, and infrastructure severely affected. In Mandalay, Myanmar's second-largest city, 10 bodies were recovered from a collapsed building. The disaster has also left 5,017 people injured and 160 missing.

Challenges and Controversies

Heavy rains and strong winds have hindered rescue and relief efforts, exacerbating the misery of those left homeless. The military government and its opponents have accused each other of violating ceasefire declarations, with reports of continued fighting and aerial bombing in remote areas.

Aftermath and Response

The earthquake has officially been named "the Big Mandalay Earthquake" for documentation and referencing purposes. A total of 1,738 personnel from 20 countries participated in search and rescue operations, helping to find and extract 653 survivors. The international community continues to provide support and aid to those affected by this devastating disaster.

Ongoing Concerns

With scattered showers and thunderstorms forecasted for the region, concerns remain about the well-being of those affected and the potential for further complications. The situation is further complicated by the ongoing civil war in Myanmar, which has been ongoing since the army's 2021 takeover.
