US F-1 visa holders in shock (X/@DropSiteNews)
Hundreds of international students in the United States have received emails from the US Department of State (DOS) instructing them to self-deport after their F-1 student visas were revoked. This crackdown appears to target students involved in campus activism, including those who attended marches or engaged with "anti-national" social media posts.
An F-1 visa is a non-immigrant visa allowing international students to study in the US at accredited institutions, including colleges, universities, and language training schools. To qualify, applicants must be accepted into an approved program, demonstrate English proficiency, and show sufficient financial resources.
The crackdown follows US Secretary of State Marco Rubio's comments on canceling international student visas for "anti-national" acts. Rubio emphasized the US has the right to decide who enters as a visitor. The DOS is now scrutinizing new student visa applications, including social media activity. Students found guilty can be denied visas, and those already in the US may face deportation.
Many students are shocked and concerned about the visa revocations, with some questioning the boundaries of free speech for foreign students in the US. Immigration authorities advise students to carefully inspect their documents and refrain from unjustified travel. Protests have been held at institutions like Columbia to promote academic freedom and safeguard international students' rights.
