Toronto: A Delta Airlines plane crash-landed at Toronto Pearson International Airport on Monday, leaving 18 people injured, including a child. According to Peel Regional Paramedic Services, three of the injured are in critical condition. Local media reports indicate that the aircraft flipped upon landing, causing a temporary shutdown of all flight operations. However, services have since resumed.

Airport and emergency services respond swiftly

The airport confirmed the incident in a post on X, stating, "Emergency teams are responding. All passengers and crew are accounted for." Local police and paramedics have set up a staging area off the runway to manage the situation. Delta Airlines released a statement confirming that the aircraft carried 76 passengers and four crew members at the time of the accident. “Delta is working to connect with customers traveling from, to, or through YYZ who should monitor their flight status via the Fly Delta app,” the airline stated.

FAA imposes ground stop at Toronto airport

Following the crash, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) implemented a ground stop at Toronto Pearson Airport, temporarily halting all departures and arrivals. Peel Regional Police spokesperson Constable Sarah Patten told the media, “There is a plane crash. However, we don’t know the circumstances surrounding it at this point. Most passengers are out and unharmed, but we are still investigating.”

North America faces string of air crashes

The Toronto Pearson incident is the latest in a series of aviation disasters in North America. Alaska Turboprop Crash: Earlier this month, a turboprop plane traveling from Unalakleet to Nome disappeared. The wreckage was later discovered on a drifting ice floe, with 10 fatalities reported.
Washington Midair Collision: Late last month, an American Airlines regional jet collided midair with a U.S. military Black Hawk helicopter while landing at Reagan Washington National Airport, resulting in 67 deaths. The increasing frequency of air accidents has sparked concerns over aviation safety measures across the continent. Investigations into the Toronto crash are ongoing, with authorities working to determine the cause of the accident.
