Davos 2024: The United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Wednesday lauded India's economic and infrastructure progress under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling it an "extraordinary success story." However, he emphasized that the US-India relationship, while reaching "a new place at a new level," also includes "sustained and very real conversations" about democracy and human rights.

Blinken delivered these remarks during a Q&A session at the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting 2024, responding to a question about Hindu nationalism concerns amidst India's growth. He highlighted the close bond between President Biden and Modi, stating that their discussions encompass a wide range of topics, including the crucial issue of human rights.

"It's part of a very sustained and very real conversation we have always had," Blinken acknowledged, reaffirming the US commitment to raising issues of democracy and human rights with its allies, including India. He elaborated on the Biden administration's foreign policy shift, prioritizing these fundamental concerns in various engagements globally.

"We do it in different ways in different places. Because of the nature of the relationship, we have with the country, with the government, it's part of very sustain, very real conversation and the conversation that we have off course produces positive change," Blinken said.

What is Blinken's take on Taiwan's presidential elections?

The Secretary of State also addressed Taiwan's recent presidential elections. He said, "We see a very powerful affirmation of democracy. We congratulated the people of Taiwan. Our fundamental interest is that peace and stability is maintained."

"One of the hallmarks of success of the US-China relationship has actually been with the management of the Taiwan issue," Blinken stated, highlighting the crucial role of maintaining the status quo in regional stability.

Diplomatic relations of the United States and China

Highlighting the diplomatic relations between the United States and China, he said, "Since the establishment of diplomatic relations has actually with the management of the Taiwan issue. The premium we have had in maintaining the status quo."
