Cyclone Hamoon makes landfall in coastal Bangladesh

‘Hamoon’ is expected to move north eastwards and weaken into a deep depression during next six hours and further into a depression during subsequent six hours.

Cyclonic Storm "Hamoon" over coastal Bangladesh has started the landing process and is expected to diminish into a deep depression during the next six hours, according to India Meteorological Department.

"The Cyclonic Storm Hamoon over coastal Bangladesh lay centered at 0530 hours IST of 25th Oct about 40 km east-southeast of Chittagong (Bangladesh)," the weather department said today adding that it was proceeding with "a wind speed of 80 to 90 kmph gusting to 100 kmph," the IMD posted on X.

According to the predictions, ‘Hamoon’ is expected to move north eastwards and weaken into a deep depression during next six hours and further into a depression during subsequent six hours, it said.

According to Pamban Port officials in Rameswaram, a ‘storm warning cage number 2’ was installed on Tuesday to alert fishermen to the Severe Cyclonic Storm ‘Hamoon’ over the Bay of Bengal.

In anticipation of the development of Cyclone ‘Hamoon’ in the Bay of Bengal, the Odisha administration had on Monday issued an alert to all Urban Local Bodies (ULB).

Meanwhile, the MeT Department predicted on Tuesday that the Severe Cyclonic Storm ‘TEJ’ over coastal Yemen would move further west-northwestward and weaken into a depression over the course of the following six hours. It did, however, decrease into a cyclonic storm about 1130 IST on October 24.

Apart from this, light to moderate rainfall is expected at many places with isolated heavy rainfall over Mizoram on October 25.

IMD has also predicted light to moderate rainfall at many places over Mizoram and Tripura for Thursday. Nagaland, Manipur and east Arunachal Pradesh will witness drizzle on Wednesday and Thursday.

Meanwhile, the weather department has advised fishermen not to venture into the Northeast Bay of Bengal and along and off Bangladesh and north Myanmar coasts till October 25 and adjoining areas of northwest Bay of Bengal and Eastcentral Bay of Bengal till Wednesday afternoon.
