The sources claim that China and Cuba have made a covert agreement to build an electronic surveillance centre on the island, which is around 160 km away from Florida.

The US claims that they learned about the plan several weeks ago. But additionally, they have said that they are still unclear whether China has started building the surveillance facility or not.

The other source familiar with the intelligence says it suggests that a deal has been struck in principle but there has not been any movement on the building facility. But the Cuban authorities have denied the claims.

Notably, this is not the first time when China has attempted to spy on US electronic communications, known as signals intelligence. An alleged Chinese spy balloon that passed over the US in February had the ability to acquire signal intelligence, which it is thought it communicated back to Beijing almost immediately.

Meanwhile, on Thursday, Cuban Deputy foreign minister Carlos Fernandez de Cossio called the allegations “untrue”.

In addition, the US has been attempting to improve relations and last month sent CIA Director Bill Burns to Beijing for negotiations with Chinese authorities. However, China’s defence ministry declined to meet with Lloyd Austin, the US secretary of defence and issued a warning to the US to halt flying over Chinese airspace and waterways.
