Donald Trump
The Trump administration in the US has created a new plan to force illegal immigrants to leave the country on their own. Under the scheme, such people will be included in the Social Security Administration's "Death Master List," which usually contains the names of deceased persons. This would invalidate the social security numbers of these immigrants and deprive them of government benefits and financial services. This information was given by an administrative official on condition of anonymity. The plan would apply to immigrants who were granted legal temporary status in the US under the Biden administration but have now had their status revoked.
Social Security numbers are required to pay taxes and receive government services in the US. Without it, a person cannot open a bank account, get a credit card, or perform many other important financial functions. The objective of this plan is that when illegal immigrants find themselves completely cut off from financial resources, they will voluntarily leave the United States. According to the New York Times report, the plan is another step by the Trump administration to further ramp up the use of sensitive data.
So far, more than 6,300 people have been added to a "Death Master List" suspected of being criminals or involved in terrorist activities, The New York Times reported, citing documents. The Trump administration believes that if there is no economic or legal benefit from staying in the US, people will return on their own. "President Trump has promised to crack down on illegal immigrants, and this plan is a step in that direction," said Liz Houston, Assistant Press Secretary to President Trump.
Immigration officials to get tax-related data
The US Treasury Department, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and the Department of Homeland Security have reached an agreement under which the tax data of immigrants will now be shared with immigration authorities. This will allow them to monitor unauthorized immigrants. The decision has led to the resignation of the acting head of the IRS and several other senior officials. In addition, the Trump administration is now preparing to impose a fine of $998 a day on immigrants who are not leaving the United States despite deportation orders. If they do not pay the fine, their property can also be confiscated.
