In a controversial move, Pakistan Markazi Muslim League (PMML), led by Hafiz Saeed, architect of the Mumbai terror attacks, is all set to field candidates for every constituency in the upcoming February 8, 2024, general elections.
Notably, Hafiz Saeed's son, Talha Saeed, joined the political fray, contesting from NA-127, Lahore, while PMML's central president, Khalid Masood Sindhu, challenges Nawaz Sharif in NA-130.
Despite serving time since July 2019 for charges unrelated to the terror attacks, Hafiz Saeed's PMML pursues political ambitions. In April 2022, he was sentenced to 33 years for 'financing terrorism.'
Despite UN and EU terrorist designations, Saeed remained uncharged and unextradited for nearly two decades, sparking international concerns over counter-terrorism efforts.
PMML adopted the chair as its electoral symbol, symbolising its campaign for every national and provincial seat in Pakistan. A defiant PMML spokesperson stated, "We have left no seat uncontested."
Previously known as Milli Muslim League, PMML emerged after the ban on the banned Jamaat-ud-Dawa's political face in 2018. A renewed bid for political relevance is taking shape.
With the nomination process concluded, the 2024 general elections enter a competitive phase. Over 600 candidates file papers for Lahore's constituencies, setting the stage for an intense political battle.
Renowned figures like Maryam Nawaz, Hamza Shehbaz, and Imran Khan file nominations, setting the scene for a high-stakes election. The final candidate lists will be unveiled after the vetting process by the Pakistan Election Commission.
