Completely False: US NSC dismisses reports of intel sharing with Tehran on Mossad agents

The alleged mission aimed to inform Iran's Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, that the Biden administration was unaware of Israel's involvement in the assassinations of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh and Hezbollah's Fuad Shukr.

An unnamed source from Iran's Supreme National Security Council reportedly informed the Kuwaiti newspaper al Jarida that a high-level American security delegation, mediated by Oman, made a covert trip to Tehran. The claim was published on Wednesday, raising questions about the alleged mission's objectives. However, a US National Security Council spokesperson quickly refuted the report, stating, “This is categorically false,” as quoted by The Post.

Despite the denial, Fox News highlighted that the supposed delegation's mission was to convey messages to Tehran aimed at reducing the escalating tensions between Iran and Israel. According to al Jarida, the delegation's purpose was to relay to Iran's Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, that the Biden-Harris administration had been "kept in the dark" by Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu regarding the recent assassinations of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh and Hezbollah operative Fuad Shukr. Israel has taken responsibility for Shukr's assassination but has not yet commented on Haniyeh's death in Tehran.

Allegations Surrounding Haniyeh's Death

Haniyeh was reportedly killed by an explosive device that had been smuggled into his guesthouse in Tehran. This report was first brought to light by The New York Times and independently confirmed by The Jerusalem Post. The bomb, hidden since June, was allegedly triggered using remote technology.

Further allegations, detailed by The Telegraph, suggest that Mossad enlisted Iranian security agents to plant the explosives in Haniyeh's room. The report, citing two unnamed Iranian officials, claims that these agents later left the country but maintained a close connection within Iran.

A billboard displaying a photo of the newly appointed Hamas leader, Yahya Sinwar, was observed on a Tehran street on August 12, 2024, signalling the rapid shift in the organization's leadership.

Speculation and Denials

Fox News also mentioned that the American delegation purportedly arrived in Iran via Turkey, landing at Payam-e-Khorram Airport in Karaj last Thursday. It was speculated that they held a two-hour meeting with Iranian officials before returning to Turkey. Allegedly, the US delegation presented a list of ten Mossad agents operating within Iran, believed to be involved in the assassinations.

According to al Jarida, this supposed act by the American delegation was seen as a "good faith" gesture in response to Israel's unilateral strikes, which were reportedly carried out without US coordination.
