A parliamentary delegation from Malawi met with President Droupadi Murmu in New Delhi on Monday, highlighting the cordial relations between India and Malawi and the potential for further strengthening their ties, the Ministry of External Affairs said.

The President welcomed the delegation to the Rashtrapati Bhavan and emphasised the longstanding friendly relations between India and Malawi.

“Welcoming the delegation, the President said that India and Malawi share long-standing cordial and friendly relations, and there is immense scope for adding greater depth to our ties,” the MEA release said.

“She stated that our common faith in democratic values and pluralism makes India and Malawi natural partners,” the release added.

The parliamentary delegation from Malawi, led by National Assembly Speaker Catherine Gotani Hara, engaged in talks with President Murmu. During the discussions, the President noted that India has been a significant trade and private investment partner for Malawi, as well as the fact that Malawian nationals prefer India for health and education purposes.

“She [President Murmu] was happy to note that India has a strong development partnership programme with Malawi and a number of projects have been implemented in Malawi in the areas such as infrastructure, health, water resources, capacity building and education,” the MEA said.

Speaker Om Birla welcomes Malawi delegation to Parliament

Earlier in the day, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla welcomed the Malawi delegation in Parliament. He emphasized the importance of such bilateral parliamentary dialogues in strengthening India’s multifaceted cooperation with Malawi.

Birla praised the cordial and friendly relations between India and Malawi, which, he said, have taken on a new direction under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Malawi President Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera.

Notably, the Speaker lauded the peaceful transfer of power following the June 2020 presidential elections in Malawi, expressing his hope that it would bolster the constitutional bodies within the country. Recognizing the Parliaments as representatives of their citizens’ expectations and aspirations, Birla drew attention to India’s progress in fulfilling the expectations of a ‘new India’, including the construction of a new Parliament building.

Birla assured Malawi of India’s support for its economic development and emphasized the need to promote trade in agricultural products, particularly cotton products.
