Colombia forced to bow down after Trump's warning! Ready to get funding of Dollar 400 million

Columbia University in Florida has accepted the Trump administration's hard-line terms after it lost $400 million in funding. The university will now implement a ban on mask-wearing on campus (except for health and religious reasons) and appoint new leadership to oversee its Middle East, South Asian and African studies department.

Columbia University has agreed to the Trump administration's tough terms for the return of federal funding. The university was blamed for not halting anti-Semitic events and anti-Israel protests, and this prompted the administration to block $400 million in funding on March 7. Subsequently, the university promised significant reforms like mask bans, disciplinary rule changes and curriculum review. The university will now assign arrest authority to 36 campus police officers and the Department of Middle East, South Asian and African Studies will be put under "academic oversight". The Trump administration had made it clear that if these adjustments were not taken, additional billions of dollars in funding could also be at risk.

Why was funding halted?

The Trump government charged Columbia University with not being able to make its Jewish students safe and also not containing the anti-Israel rallies. According to the government, Jewish students were subject to continual violence, threat, and harassment since October 2023 and the university administration took no decisive steps. Education Secretary Linda McMahon stated that in order for a university to receive federal money, it would have to follow anti-discrimination laws. Colombia long neglected the safety of its Jewish students. Now we are establishing the fact that this kind of negligence will not be accepted.

What were the conditions the university had to agree upon?

  1. Columbia University had to agree upon the following strict conditions to regain federal funding.
  2. Ban on masks: Masks will no longer be worn on campus for any reason except religious and health purposes.
  3. Power to arrest has been granted to campus police: 36 campus police officers now have the right to arrest students.
  4. Disciplinary action: Disciplinary action has to be taken by the university against the April 2024 protesters who had occupied Hamilton Hall.
  5. Curriculum review: New leadership will be appointed in the Department of Middle East, South Asian and African Studies to review.
  6. Abolition of Judicial Board: The judicial board responsible for overseeing the disciplinary issues of the university will be dismantled.
  7. Academic oversight: Certain departments will be placed under external administrative oversight.

Why did Columbia University capitulate?

This dollar 400 million Columbia University funding was 8% of overall government aid. The administration of the university was afraid that if it did not agree to the administration's terms, it might lose billions of dollars in funding."Anti-Semitism was spreading in Colombia and for months now we've been calling on the authorities to end it," explained Brian Cohen, the executive director of the Hillel chapter. Now we expect that this decision will serve as a warning to the university.".

Conflict between Columbia University and the Trump administration

This conflict between Columbia University and the Trump administration can set off a bigger debate of federal intervention against the autonomy of academic institutions in America. While the university has embraced all the demands of the administration for the resumption of funding, the question now is whether these measures will be effective in halting the series of demonstrations and anti-Semitic occurrences on campus?
