The Chinese national legislature passed a new law to instil more patriotic understanding among children and families on Tuesday, as per media reports. This initiative was taken by the Chinese government to counter challenges such as "historical nihilism" and safeguard "national unity".

According to the media reports, the law named the Patriotic Education Law enables the citizens to carry out patriotic education citing that some people "are at a loss about what is patriotism."

The term “historical nihilism" is used in China to describe public doubt and scepticism over the Chinese Communist Party's description of past events.

Patriotic Education Law

The law is set to be effective from January 1, 2024. It outlines the responsibilities of the central and local government departments as well as schools and families.

Media reports also say that though the law aims to promote patriotism it also “stresses the need to be rational, inclusive and open-minded, open the country wider to the world and embrace other civilisations.”

It also says that patriotic education respects the “history and cultural traditions of other countries and draws inspiration from all of human civilization’s outstanding achievement.”

This also includes targeted measures for different groups of people, including government officials, employees, villagers and residents in special administrative regions of Hong Kong and Macau, as well as Taiwan, according to media reports.
