China News: In a devastating incident in Zhuhai City, southern China, a 62-year-old driver rammed his car into a crowded sports center, leaving at least 35 people dead and another 43 injured on Monday. According to police reports, the driver has been detained, but it remains unclear whether the crash was intentional or an accident.

Incident Sparks Chaos Ahead of Major Event

The tragedy occurred just a day before the highly anticipated Zhuhai Airshow, organized by the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA), which began on Tuesday. The driver, identified only by his family name Fan, created panic and chaos at the Xiangzhou district sports center, a popular location for residents to exercise and socialize.

Emergency Response and Eyewitness Accounts

Emergency responders rushed to the scene, with footage showing a firefighter performing CPR on a victim. Disturbing videos circulating on social media revealed dozens of individuals lying on the sports center’s running track. In one clip, a woman could be heard saying, “My foot is broken.”

The emergency clinic at Zhuhai's Shang Chong Hospital confirmed receiving injured victims, though many left after initial treatment. Social media posts related to the sports center incident were sparse, with articles published by Chinese media on Monday night reportedly removed soon after, as per sources.

Online Censorship and Restricted Discussions

Posts discussing the tragedy on platforms like Weibo were limited, with few details emerging. Most references lacked pictures or substantial information, reflecting tight control over the narrative. Teacher Li, a prominent news blogger and dissident, shared footage on X (formerly Twitter), capturing the aftermath. His account regularly features user-submitted news, often addressing issues suppressed within the country.

Sports Center Temporarily Shuttered

The Xiangzhou sports center, which typically attracts hundreds for activities like running, soccer, and dancing, has been closed until further notice. The closure has added to the unease among residents grappling with the shocking event.

This tragedy underscores a troubling trend of random attacks in China. Recent incidents include a 50-year-old man detained for attacking schoolchildren in Beijing last month, injuring five people, and a September knife attack in a Shanghai supermarket that left three dead.
