Canada: Three Indian students, including two siblings die after car's tyre comes off

Students involved in fatal car accident (GoFundMe)

New Delhi: Three Indian students from Punjab lost their lives in a road accident in Canada's New Brunswick. The incident occurred on July 27 at approximately 9:35 PM. In the tragic accident four men including three Indian students and a driver. A sudden tyre blowout caused the vehicle to veer off the highway, which led to the fatal accident.

Who are the victims? 

The victims were identified as two siblings from Malaud village in Ludhiana: Harman Somal, 23, and Navjot Somal, 19. Harman was working in a daycare in Moncton, while Navjot had arrived in Canada a few months ago on a study visa. The third victim was Rashmdeep Kaur, 23, daughter of Bhupinder Singh and Suchet Kaur from Samana in the Sangrur district of Punjab.

How did it happen?

According to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), the accident happened when one of the car's tyres came off, causing the driver to lose control. The car veered off the highway, and the three passengers were thrown from the vehicle, which led the death due to injuries. The driver sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital.

Investigation underway

Authorities are currently investigating the exact cause of the accident. The loss of a tyre is believed to be the primary cause, but further details are being examined to understand the full circumstances of the tragedy.

In response to the accident, a GoFundMe page has been created to help raise funds to send the bodies of the deceased students back to India. The tragic event has deeply affected the Indian community in Canada and back home in Punjab.

Disturbing trend surfaces

A disturbing trend of Indian students losing their lives abroad has surfaced recently. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, 633 Indian students have died overseas in the past five years due to various reasons, including accidents and violent attacks. Canada has seen the highest number of these deaths, with 172 fatalities, followed by the US with 108.
