Canada Post on Thursday has announced the release of a new postal stamp to mark the arrival of Diwali, one of the most celebrated festivals in India.

The festival is celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs, Jains and Buddhists through out the world. Diwali celebration will be on November 12, 2023.

According to the sources, the new stamp is inspired by the beautiful garlands - known as toranas - that are draped across the entrances and facades of homes and temples during Diwali. According to a description from Canada Post. It was designed by Kristine Do and illustrated by Rena Chen.

Warm orange and yellow tones blend together with green and white on a visually arresting purple-blue backdrop to create a striking stamp. The traditional components of torana garlands, marigold flowers and mango tree leaves, are skillfully interpreted at its core, according to the statement.

The stamp was priced at CA$ 5.52, or roughly ₹340, and came in a unique booklet of six. Canada Post has commemorated Diwali by releasing a commemorative stamp for the festival for the fifth year; the first four were issued in 2017, 2020, 2021 and 2022. A total of 330,000 stamps have been released.

Canada PM Justin Trudeau attends Diwali celebrations

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Wednesday attended a Diwali event where lighted lamps to celebrate the 'festival of lights' on Parliament Hill in Ottawa.

Noteworthy here is that this move has come amid an ongoing diplomatic standoff between India and Canada, which has resulted in deteriorated ties between the nations.

Sharing the event's glimpse on his official Instagram handle, Trudeau wrote, "In just a few days, people across the country and around the world will celebrate Diwali and Bandi Chhor Divas. Both celebrations are about the triumph of light over darkness, and about optimism - and both are a symbol of the light we all need more of."

"To everyone who came together for yesterday's event on Parliament Hill: Happy Diwali! Happy Bandi Chhor Divas! I hope the celebrations this week bring you optimism for the year ahead," he said further, extending his wishes on the occasion.
