Canada News: Canada's new Liberal Party leader and next Prime Minister Mark Carney is keen to improve relations with India, but his immigration policy could affect Indian citizens. Carney has said he will limit immigration until it returns to pre -Covid levels. According to a report in the Business Standard, Carney's campaign had prepared an outline for economic development and immigration plans ahead of the first leadership debate in Montreal in February 2025.

'No concrete statement made on immigration'

Darshan Maharaja, an immigration analyst from Canada, told Business Standard that Mark Carney has not yet made any concrete statement on immigration policy. He expressed the possibility that Carney will not make any major changes to the current immigration policy. Maharaja also said that the tariff war with the US is the biggest challenge for Canada at the moment, due to which it is unlikely that Carney will be put under any pressure on the issue of immigration. In his victory speech, Mark Carney did not comment on the issue of immigration, but when asked about Donald Trump's trade war and Canada becoming the 51st state of the United States, he said bluntly, 'Absolutely not!'

'Want to improve relations with India'

Mark Carney has expressed his desire to improve relations with India. Earlier, during Justin Trudeau's tenure, relations between India and Canada had deteriorated significantly. Trudeau had alleged that Indian agents may have been involved in the killing of Khalistani leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar, due to which relations between the two countries had become tense. However, India had dismissed these allegations as completely baseless.
