Canada gears up for mass evacuation of 45,000 from Lebanon amid Israel-Hezbollah war

On October 7, the militant Palestinian organization Hamas unleashed a never-before-seen onslaught against Israel, infiltrating neighborhoods close to the Gaza Strip with hundreds of militants. Israeli estimates put the death toll at about 1,200, with over 250 captured as prisoners and sent to Gaza.

New Delhi: As hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah worsen, Canada is getting ready to evacuate 45,000 of its people from Lebanon, according to a report by Channel 12. The report detailed a contentious exchange between Israel's foreign minister, Israel Katz, and Canada's foreign minister, Melanie Joly, earlier today.

Canada is planning to evacuate people

During their conversation, Joly informed Katz that the Canadian military is currently drafting the evacuation plans. Katz requested that Ottawa apply pressure to Iran, a country that backs Hezbollah, to put an end to the militant group. Katz later commented on X, saying, "Israel cannot allow the Hezbollah terror organization to continue attacking its territory and citizens, and soon we will make the necessary decisions." There was no formal readout of the meeting.

What Times of Israel said?

According to The Times of Israel, Katz also had a meeting with Sigrid Kaag, the UN Senior Coordinator for Humanitarian Relief and Reconstruction in Gaza. According to Katz's office, the discussion focused on the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Gaza. Channel 12 reports that Kaag informed Katz about the increasing chaos and criminal activity in the Strip, implying that the UN could soon be unable to continue operating there.

According to Kaag, more than a thousand truckloads of aid are prepared for delivery at the Gazan borders. However, the UN has chosen not to distribute the goods due to worries about gangs and theft.

Kaag expressed concerns about Palestinians

Kaag expressed concerns that Palestinians may turn their animosity toward United Nations agents. She warned that Israel might have to handle the humanitarian crisis on its own if things don't improve, according to The Times Of Israel.
Kaag also requested that dual-use goods be permitted entry into Gaza. According to Katz, Israel would closely monitor all aid to ensure that no materials are allowed in that Hamas might use to produce weapons. Both Canada and Israel are quite concerned about the current state of affairs. The fact that Canada is preparing for a large-scale evacuation indicates how dangerous a clash may be. But Israel is firm in its opposition to Hezbollah and continues to impose strict security measures.

Israel-Hezbollah war

Israel and Hezbollah exchanged more cross-border gunfire as tensions in the region escalated following Israel's announcement that it had approved plans for an offensive in Lebanon and the terrorist group backed by Iran vowing to bombard their enemy with rockets. On Thursday, Hezbollah claimed to have launched numerous rockets into northern Israel in response for a fatal airstrike in south Lebanon that claimed the lives of one of the organization's agents, according to Israel. Throughout the day, Hezbollah also claimed responsibility for a number of other attacks against Israeli positions and personnel.

The Israeli military responded by carrying out air and artillery strikes on Gaza that resulted in the deaths of over 33,000 Palestinians, according to the health ministry run by Hamas in Gaza.
