Major jihadist attack in Niger (File )
The government has announced three days of national mourning. Niger, Burkina Faso and Mali have been battling jihadist groups for the last ten years. Which include groups affiliated with al-Qaeda and the Islamic State. At least 44 civilians were killed in an attack by a jihadist group on a village in the western region of the African nation of Niger.
The assault occurred on Friday afternoon in Kukoro rural district and in the village of Phambita, along the border with Mali and Burkina Faso. In a statement, the ministry accused the Islamic State in the Great Sahara of perpetrating the assault. Individuals were performing namaz "Around 2 pm, when Muslims were performing prayers, terrorists heavily-armed surrounded the mosque and brutally slaughtered it," the ministry stated in a release. Moreover, the gunmen also ignited a market and some houses and then escaped from the location. "
At least 44 civilians died in the attack, and 13 were seriously wounded, according to the ministry. The government has announced three days of national mourning. Following recent military coups in all three nations, the junta government expelled French troops and contracted Russians for security services.
They have vowed to create a new security group known as the Sahel Alliance of States. But analysts indicate that the security situation in the Sahel region has worsened much since these military regimes came into power. Many civilians are being slaughtered in jihadist attacks and violence perpetrated by government troops.
