Prime Minister Narendra Modi came bearing gifts for the international leaders at the BRICS meeting in Johannesburg. the gifts were works of art and traditional objects that reflect Indian heritage.
According to officials, Modi presented a pair of ‘surahi’ from Telangana to South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, and Nagaland shawl to his wife and the first lady of the host country. Besides, a ‘Bidri vase’ was also gifted to Ramaphosa. This is exclusive to Bidar, a Karnataka city. It is cast with an alloy of zinc, copper and other non-ferrous metals. ‘Naga shawls’ were also part of the gifts’ which are an exquisite form of textile art that have been woven for centuries by the tribes in Nagaland in the northeastern part of India. These shawls are renowned for their vivid hues, elaborate patterns, and the utilisation of age-old weaving methods that have been handed down from one generation to the next. Every Naga shawl has its own narrative that reflects the tribe’s culture, history, and way of life.
Modi presented Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, with Gond painting from Madhya Pradesh which is one of the most admired form of tribals art.
PM Modi, interacting with the media at the BRICS Summit said, “the expansion and modernisation of BRICS is a message that all institutions in the world need to mould themselves according to changing times. India has always fully supported the expansion of the BRICS membership. India has been of the view that the addition of new members will further strengthen BRICS as an organisation, and give a new impetus to all our common endeavors”.
